I was also disappointed to see no return of David's wife and Whitmore's assistant Connie, played by Margaret Colin. There was no return for Will Smith and his character Captain Steven Hiller as apparently Will Smith wanted more money to reprise the role, so instead they wrote him out in this sequel.
He is accompanied by Dr Isaacs, again played by John Storey. Seems a but far fetched that but great to see him back. Brent Spiner returns as the long haired scientist Dr Okun, who many believed had died after being used by an alien for communication with President Whitmore but is actually in a coma that he has been in for 20 years. Jeff Goldblum is back as David who is now in an expert advisory role and his Dad, Julius is also back with Judd Hirsch making his return also. President James Whitmore, who is haunted by the events of the first invasion and is seemingly an old broken man. What I did love is seeing Bill Pullman reprise his role as former U.S. The CGI is pretty relentless but it does it well, so why not? It's the kind of movie which lends itself incredibly well to CGI, and blinding the viewer from the holes in the story with big shiny space ships, future tech, aliens and huge epic invasion style sequences works for me and is a fun way to relax and and let yourself be dazzled by the magic of modern cinema whilst switching your brain off! It's not going to win any Oscars, it's not going to change your life in anyway or endow you with any new found knowledge, but it will pass a couple of hours by quite harmlessly if you allow it to and enjoy sci-fi/disaster/invasion style movies with lots of special effects, pretty people and awesome space lasers.įirstly my 3 star review isn't about the quality of this film on 4K, it looks and sounds amazing! It's just a huge disappointment of a sequel after 20 years of waiting.Ģ0 years after the invasion, we see humanity using the alien technology to help improve transport as well as defenses. Yes, big parts of it are cheesy, characters are mostly walking cliches who are dripped in plot armor so that they generally survive impossible and ridiculous odds and the American dominance dream is a little heavy here and there in its clunky message, but its a Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster, so you have to expect a little of that in most such films of this size with a big budget. But as a stand alone film which just exists in the same universe at a different time (20 years later, to be precise) with some of the same characters then I think it's a great fun sci-fi alien adventure and is easy to switch off to and enjoy. At the very least, this film by default loses the element of surprise and could never be seen as original or groundbreaking.

If you're going to compare this directly to the first movie then it's fair to say that in comparison that yes, this sequel isn't a patch on it and is probably only 3 stars at best.
